Despite the hype and doomsday predictions about the future of these technologies, they are making incredible progress, for both advanced and practical use.

 

Anton van den Hengel was the founding Director of The Australian Institute for Machine Learning, Australia’s largest machine learning research group, and on many measures its most successful.

Anton is now the Director of Applied Science at Amazon and Director of the Centre for Augmented Reasoning at the University of Adelaide. At Amazon, Anton is leading a Machine Learning research group, working on Visual Question Answering, Conversational Agents, and general Computer Vision.


KAREN NELSON-FIELD

Presenting on using machine learning to advance human measurement in advertising

Using the human gaze, ML models and media science methodology to gauge effectiveness questions by looking at human response to advertising. We are on the precipice of change with attention metrics changing the way media is traded globally.

 

Professor Nelson-Field is a globally acclaimed researcher in media science. She is a regular speaker on the major circuits, including Cannes and SXSW, and has secured research funding from some of the world’s largest advertisers. Her first book, Viral Marketing: the science of sharing, set the record straight on hunting for ‘viral success’.

Karen’s commercial work combines tech and innovative methodological design to build attention measurement and insight products to guide the industry through a disrupting digital economy.

Her team works with customers across all industries to help them realise the value of cloud technology for both economic and business transformation. 

Sarah is passionate about innovation and education to enable customers to create a culture of change and modernise their organisations.  Prior to joining Amazon, Sarah was in the energy industry holding various roles within software development, M&A, strategic alliances, marketing and business development.  She is an advocate for developing an inclusive culture and authentic leadership.


TOM HAJDU

Tom is Professor and Chair of Creative Technologies at the University of Adelaide where he is Director of the Sia Furler Institute advocating innovation and entrepreneurship in the Faculty of Arts. Recently Tom launched a new initiative intersecting Art and Artificial Intelligence launching AI artistic research initiatives including Laurie Anderson as the first AI artist-in-residence called the Art Intelligence Agency.

The work with Laurie Anderson has been featured as part of her Norton Lectures at Harvard University and at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

In 2019, through Consilium Technology, Seth founded a spin-out company, an Ag Analytics Platform for identifying, measuring and monitoring the world’s high-value crops for food and resource security.

How Swimming Australia utilised machine learning at the Tokyo Olympics with the development of a specific application to support the coaches decision making process around Olympic relay selections.

 

Jess Corones is an experienced sport scientist with a deep understanding of performance for the coach and athlete. Having worked in the Australian sporting system in a number of different high performance roles from biomechanics and performance analyst to talent identification and development to the elite level performance. Jess has implemented and driven a number of innovation and technology projects in the Australian Swim Team and led the performance support team on the Australian Olympic Swim Team in Tokyo to their most successful Olympic performance in history.  


DR. BRENTON COOPER

Matt Michalewicz has more than 20 years of experience in starting and running high-growth tech companies, especially in the areas of machine learning, predictive analytics, and decision optimisation.

He is currently the CEO of Complexica, a provider of Artificial Intelligence software for optimising sales & marketing decisions, and a director of several ASX-listed companies, including Prophecy International (ASX: PRO) and ComOps (ASX: COM).

Simon Lucey (Ph.D.) is the Director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at the University of Adelaide, Australia’s largest machine learning research group. His previous appointments were at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute (RI) in Pittsburgh USA, autonomous vehicle company Argo AI and CSIRO (2009-2014). He has received various career awards including an ARC Future Fellowship (2009-2013).

He has published over 300 articles, has over 11,000 citations with an h-index of 52. He has also registered 11 patents in computer vision. Simon’s research interests span computer vision, machine learning, and robotics.
