Rosie Broikos’ journey from high school graduate to Event Workforce Coordinator at Tennis Australia, and now Casual Game Day Coordinator at Port Adelaide Football Club is a powerful example of how passion, opportunity and the right support can turn an interest into a career.
While completing Year 12, Rosie discovered that her love of sport could extend far beyond the field. Through the Port Adelaide Institute of Sport and Business (PAISB), powered by Flinders University, that passion quickly became a clear career pathway.
Balancing her studies with regular involvement in a range of sports and competitions, Rosie developed a strong interest in what makes a high-performing team tick.
While sport had already taught her the importance of teamwork and strategy, it wasn’t until she learned about the Diploma of Sports Management through PAISB that she began to see the industry as a long-term career option.
“What initially motivated me to apply was the PAISB’s unique opportunity to study while gaining hands-on experience with a professional sporting organisation,” Ms Broikos said.
“The partnership model immediately appealed to me, as it offered real insight into the behind-the-scenes operations of an AFL club, while also providing a strong academic foundation in the business of sport.”
Rosie’s time at the PAISB was defined by invaluable learning opportunities and meaningful connections, including completing more than 100 hours of hands-on industry experience — a crucial insight into the demands of working in a fast-paced professional environment.
“Through the PAISB, I developed strong communication, time management and organisational skills, as well as a solid understanding of professional workplace expectations,” she said.
“The hands-on industry experience also taught me how to work effectively within a team and adapt quickly in fast-paced environments, all of which are directly applicable to my current role.”
It was those experiences, and the relationships built along the way, that ultimately helped Rosie secure a role at both Tennis Australia and Port Adelaide Football Club after completing her studies.
In her role at Tennis Australia, Rosie managed and supervised more than 260 volunteers, as well as the casual workforce for the Adelaide International.
“My role included workforce planning, onboarding, scheduling and training, while ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the event,” she said.
“Above all, I focused on creating a positive and enjoyable environment, ensuring our team and volunteers feel supported, engaged and valued throughout the event.”
When asked what advice she would give to those considering their next step, Rosie’s message was clear.
“Build relationships, show genuine interest and embrace every learning opportunity,” she said. “You never know where your connections might take you.”
